New Americana: Starry Gold, Slick Stripes and the Modern Cool

Written by , Posted in Seasonal Trends

The world is your oyster, but America remains a pearl. Perfectly rough-and-tumble, the chic Yankee knows how to play with pattern, texture, and gloss with the right amount of balance. Never one to remain conservative, taking risks is part of staying free (at least, sartorially-speaking).

New Americana is all about mixing & matching. We love a good stripe, and when it’s simple like this Alice + Olivia jersey dress, we can’t help but jazz it up. Adding small nods to Native American design makes using pops of turquoise sing with LUCKY Brand starburst earrings. Ready for the beach or a sidewalk stroll, sandals are the norm for warm weather, and these strappy Rag & Bone flats let us go from sexy to barefoot in a second. Nothing says America quite like a Levi’s denim jacket, and the darker shade makes it more runway than cowboy. Top it off with a nail polish, aptly named “Charmed” by Michael Kors and you’re ready for the glam country.

Our Martin Marino Fiorina handbag is the perfect match with it’s classic silhouette that is ageless and fun. We love its’ compact size and the additional cross-body strap that comes with it to make it the best hands-free accessory. With the body in our Aquatic color leather and the base customized with our stunning Fashion Oro, this is a piece that perfectly harmonizes with the turquoise elements and brings a sparkle to the simplest outfits.

San Francisco Bay Area S/S 2015 Collection Trunk Show

Written by , Posted in Events

There’s so much to be said for seeing something up-close & personal. Just the other week, we hosted a fabulous afternoon in Walnut Creek for a special showing of our S/S 2015 Collection.

Bay Area fashionistas and Martin Marino customers gathered at Il Fornaio for delicious Italian antipasti and refreshing prosecco for an event that proved that some things are better in-person, especially handcrafted leather handbags.

We’ve posted all the photos on our Facebook page, so be sure to tag yourself and others, and thank you all so much for coming. Stay tuned for more events, in your city soon!

Stylist Spotlight: Nicole Lippman

Written by , Posted in In Your Bag, Stylists and Designers

For our In Your Bag Series, we had the amazing and talented Nicole Lippman help us style our handbags for a photography piece that examines the lives and adventures of the Martin Marino woman, as expressed by the items that she carries with her. Based in San Francisco, Nicole has a unique eye for the eclectic minutia of modern style. Here’s her take on her daily inspiration and motivation as both a stylist and Martin Marino fan.

Who or what had the biggest influence in your decision to become a stylist?

Since childhood, I had always found myself interested in the expression of one’s personality/mood through clothing, whether it was for a play or a friend seeking help at the mall. It was something I had always dabbled in but I never thought of pursuing the passion more until I met my super supportive boyfriend. He was probably the biggest influence in finally deciding to go after my dreams.

Where do you go to find new ideas for a shoot?

Anywhere and everywhere, although my favorites are Polyvore and Pinterest. With Polyvore, I find myself becoming inspired by a look and build a fashion story around that. As with Pinterest, I find inspiration for an overall concept and create a visual narrative from there.

How do you fuel your creativity?

I spend a ton of time working on mood boards for various projects. I also dabble in numerous arts and crafts activities.

How would you define your personal style?

My style is eclectic. My mood often sets the tone of what I want to where, taking weather into consideration as well. I often incorporate vintage/thrift items in as well.

What is your definition of “luxury”?

High Quality. When I think luxury, I don’t necessarily think of high design. I think of something that was made with love and something you can pass on to future generations.

What is your Martin Marino handbag (silhouette and colors) and why?

My Martin Marino handbag is a white-bodied Malta with black base and handles adorned with silver hardware. The color-blocking combined with the minimalistic shape creates a strikingly sophisticated piece of shoulder candy.

Martin Marino Spring Break: Palawan

Written by , Posted in Travel

The mysterious allure of traveling to a place unknown is less about the things you carry with you and more about the items you freely leave behind. We took a 24 hour flight with a single suitcase, a hatbox (for that wide brimmed straw floppy), and a spacious Salerno that was perfectly color-coordinated to the sunset when we arrived in Palawan. Part of the Philippines, Palawan is an island sandwiched between South China and Sulu Seas and it is break-your-heart kind of beautiful. While many Philippine beaches are renowned for their beauty, white limestone cliffs swathed in jungle greenery is what distinguishes Palawan from all others. The sight of the geography is breathtaking, as these magnificent formations sprout up amidst rice fields, up to the turquoise water that washes over the coastline, and even hundreds of meters from shore like mountains sprouted from water.

While Boracay has been the Philippines most popular beach destination for years, Palawan’s phenomenal beauty may be giving it a run for it’s money as resorts build to accommodate visitors from all over the world. Some of our favorite Palawan activities include:

  • Traveling down the famed Puerto Princesa Underground River. It is located on a national park and only takes a hike or boat-ride to get there. Inside you’ll be led (by boat) through a serpentine channel showcasing the undeniable splendor of Mother Nature.
  • Waking up early enough to see the sunrise with those misty mountaintops and morning fog rolling off the sea is a must-do.
  • Island hopping around Mantinloc Island, Cudugnon Cave, and 7 Commands Point for epic picnic lunches and adventuring unlike any other.
  • Staying at the El Nido Resort, a group of luxury hotels located all around Palawan. Each of it’s four locations will invite you in for a beautiful meal shore side and lure you to stay longer for the myriad of activities and eco-friendly sustainability.

Leaving Palawan is another heart breaking moment. If you’ve ever wanted to run away and never come, it may be the best place we’ve ever been to, to get lost forever!

Martin Marino Pick for Palawan: We pick the Salerno Tote for Palawan since it has the luxurious depth to hold all your seashell treasures picked up along the beach while still keeping your hands free to sip on that delicious coconut mojito.

The Fiorina Lunch Date

Spring is slowly thawing remembrances of winter and you just can’t wait to match the cherry blossoms. Time to set the Fiorina free from the dark closet, cold from too many months of winter. Bring along the perfect shade of peach rouge and the fresh citrus-floral scent that whisks you away to wild rose gardens, and you’re ready for anything – even if it’s just for an afternoon at The Smith. Accessorize with baubles and the perfect pair of sunglasses, because with the feminine shade of Rosa leather, there’s nothing this weekday can do wrong. After a decadent lunch date in the Upper East Side, take your time waltzing the sidewalks and basking in the warmth to come.

S/S 2015 Handbag Trends to Watch

Written by , Posted in Seasonal Trends

We’re not a slave to trends. In fact, most of our collection was developed long before the arbiters of taste proclaimed the most popular 2015 Spring fashion elements. We just happen to know what works. Here’s some of the most recent styles that everyone’s talking about and the Martin Marino handbag that got it all right. Our fresh take on classic styles has always served us well, and once again for S/S 2015 we’re “on-trend.”

The Hand Held

The new season is redefining the classic handbag with a bedazzling style. From hang straps to wristlets; these are far from the ordinary hand-held bag or cross bodies you used to see. We love our Salerno for a modern marriage between the tote and the handheld. Sling it casually across your elbow, or let it hang low in a single hand, it makes a powerful statement of at-ease luxury.

The Geometric Box

Square and rectangular shapes prevail in 2015. These powerful shapes express a strict elegance. Gorgeous color options and embellishments with patterns like snakeskin or metallics make this an utterly fresh fit this season. Our Malta Shopper, with it’s clean lines, and classic boxy shape is a minimalist style on top of Spring trends.

The Fringe Detail

It is no surprise that boho-chic has remained relevant in S/S 2015. Some may say it is the essence of the ‘70s style, capturing the iconic hippie and bohemian mood. The fringe and tassel have been generously applied to bags to achieve the look without projecting too much costume. Our Sorrento Hobo is perfect for free and easy practicality, with just enough iconic nod to the era.

The Cross-Body

A handbag classic that is here to stay. However, designers are experimenting with innovations such as wearing the cross-body different ways this year. Whether it is worn traditionally across the chest, worn on the back or even a slightly oversized “slouchy” style at your hip, these cross-bodies are a conquest for the new year. Our versatile Fiorina can be worn as a shoulder bag but also comes with a cross body strap to experiment your own way.
