Raakesh is a performance driven business executive with military leadership experience.
Born in Southern India and raised in Canada, he is passionate about serving communities and spearheading initiatives that have a positive impact on people.
Raakesh was selected to join Canadian Forces and underwent its rigorous Officer Training Program at the Royal Military College of Canada. Over the course of his education, Raakesh focused on ensuring he acquired the building blocks for an increasingly demanding and uncertain geopolitical landscape and familiarized himself with how military leaders succeeded in global operations, including under the United Nations umbrella. In his final year of studies, Raakesh focused on applying an operational lens to explore how Canada can increase its bi-lateral trade with India. While earning his degree, he’s led large teams (40-50 personnel), while being consistently promoted with increasing responsibilities.
The military excelled at making its Officers efficient and effective decision makers, often with little information. Raakesh become adept at cross-functional planning, strategic review, risk analysis and coordination. He consistently motivated, supervised and enabled personnel to develop themselves, both personally and professionally. He graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada, and was commissioned as an Officer in the Canadian Military, before transitioning into the private sector.
Raakesh finished his time off in the military as a Platoon Commander at the 48th Highlanders, Reserve Infantry Unit, where he had the privilege to command and lead a platoon of Infantry soldiers – 32 personnel, while also being responsible for the planning, training, intelligence, logistics and administration of the Platoon.
Over the course of his professional career, Raakesh has led the Canada India Business Council serving as it’s Head of Operations working to increase bilateral trade between Canada & India. While at the Council, Raakesh spearheaded a modernization effort that led to increasing the financial sustainability of the organization.
Understanding that access to capital was essential in capitalizing on the tremendous business opportunities arising out of India, Raakesh took up a senior role at the National Angel Capital Organization of Canada – serving as its Chief Operating Officer. While at NACO, Raakesh worked to ensure that the organization was delivering maximum value to its 3000 member investor base, who were the providers of high-risk capital that powered Canadian start-ups going from idea to reality.
Always keeping in mind that it was important to serve not only the country that raised him, but also the country that gave him birth, Raakesh transitioned his focus to addressing the massive skill development problem plaguing India’s economic growth.
Recognizing that at the fundamental level education was the most powerful tool that can help shape the future of societies, he founded an international school in Chennai, India (RCIS) to bring high quality education with Canadian values, directly into India.
A first of its kind initiative in India, RCIS will focus on educating young people holistically, beyond just academics, in order to ensure they develop into strong leaders who are capable of contributing to the future of their societies.
Raakesh joined Innovation Platform Capital to focus on growing its investment portfolio in India, in sectors that provide robust investor returns but also where a strong positive social impact can be made.
